The evening news in Dallas last night carried a long piece on the alleged sexual exploitation of a young woman by a police officer. The young woman was interviewed extensively and was taken seriously by the news reporters.
Dallas Morning News today carries a story about a local school which has just relaxed a zero tolerance rule on teachers using email, text messaging and social networking sites, instead urging teachers to abide by law and ethical codes. The relaxation is reported to follow opposition from parents, students and trustees who believe that the rule went too far in its attempt to protect groups from misconduct, "including messages that coud be seen as too personal". This leaves open the question of what is taken to be too personal, and who decides. USA Today yesterday had an interesting letter a report card for teachers from a parent, who listed teachers talking about their own kids or their own problems as being a big bugbear.
And the guy who drove the excellent, rattley hundred year old trolley car to West Village and back told me about a former priest in his area who had reported his suspicions about a priest spending time alone with children but had got nowhere. Priest now behind bars, inactive Bishop never brought to book.
